Please help me - I am looking for your favorite Jack Straw dates - I know I have heard some great ones from the late 70's early 80's (?) where Jerry is really into and does some extended solos, and the boys are just shouting the "Jack Straw from Wichita Cut his buddy down" line!

Help me find the great ones....

I'm still partial to 10-29-77...the jam may not be quite as extended as some others listed here (tho' I haven't heard them to compare yet) but for my money the Garcia solo/overall jam leading into the "..from Withcita" line is just perfect..and they sustain the whole verse in a loud and thrilling way. My favorite JS from my favorite Dead show.

5/26/72 @ the Strand Lyceum... Such a great buildup to the 'cut his buddy down' line. I've never heard a Jack Straw that cooks like this one (or that's even close, IMO).

Check out the one from Eugene in 8/93. Bobby breaks a string or has some equip problems during the Straw opener and Jer proceeds to tear the place up until Bobby returns for the ending. I'll have to check out those others listed as none seem familiar.

6-6-91. Awesome "late period" Jack. Shows the value of Bruce Hornsby to the final days.

10-10-1980
10-20-1984
08-22-1993
09-19-1990
05-23-1972
05-21-1995 (last "great" one of 94-95)

they played Jack Straw about 400 times, there's a good 20 all time versions out there...

I'm a little dusty on this one, but I'll get back with some other smokin' versions...

Thanks alot, its great that there is such a thriving place where people who care about and still listen to the music everyday can get together and shoot the shit.

the Dead will live forever...a small but not insignificant part of human history...

OK, late to a thread as usual...

Best Jack Straws...from here...
Gendelschoice is right, 10-29-77 is really good. There's quite a few from 77: 6-9 and 11-1 to name a couple more. Barton Hall 5-8 is not one of them!
1972 has nice versions but not incredibly hot versions. 73 to 76 the Dead are pretty mellow, again 'nice' versions when played but nothing like the later treatment of Jack Straw.
1-7-78, Jerry is on fire because he lost his voice
10-17-78 Winterland is a fine one, Jerry sings!;-)
10-27-79 is silky smooth with Phil punching in
12-1-79 Pittsburg classic
12-28-80 Oakland, very worthy!
2-28-81 Chicago, Phil dominates, clear SB
4-19-82 Baltimore opener is very good
That's enough, stratocaster and others gave you good ones from the Dead's later career. By the way, all these shows are great downloads too!

Oh, and DP 10 is something every deadhead needs

9-18-74, Dijon France, really does it for me, part of a great 1-2-3 opening along with Uncle John's Band and Friend of the Devil. Good sound quality also. Garcia's second solo in particular is just perfect.

The best one I have ever heard is 3/3187 at the phili spectrum. It sucks because my first show( ended up seeing about 125) was on 4/2/87. The whole show is on FIRE. Jack straw just rippes........the boys were just incredible that night. It is the most rocking version you ever heard.....just incredible. Download it....you won't bs dissappointed. If anyone needs a copy email me at mbb666666@aol.com. I will be glad to hook you up

Oh Man I love the Jack Straws!!!!!!!!!! Have any of you read about that old Dead head who had Jack Me Off parties. Well anyway.
5.8.77 ooh shit the bridge jam is so good. And the sound
10.29.77 Great drums, great intensity.
6.24.70 Super mellow second time ever played.

MY TOP THREE

P.S. Check out the Sug Mag at 10.29.77 just wow the drums are amazing. P.S.S Furthur's drummer is pretty sick, I would recommend checking him out also.

"This is a great one. But check out Jack Straw Chicago 8/20/80 before crowning 11/6/79 da best."

Along with 5/9/79, this is the greatest Jack Straw ever!
